CASTELLO DI VICARELLO, A HAVEN OF WINE AND HOSPITALITY IN THE MAREMMA
Its location is as strategic as it is discreet: halfway between Rome and Florence, far from crowded routes, immersed in a landscape that naturally invites slowness and attentive listening.

(A Family Story)
A medieval castle restored to time
The rebirth of Castello di Vicarello is the result of a long and deeply personal project. In the 1980s, the Baccheschi Berti family undertook a complex restoration of a 12th-century castle, a process that lasted eighteen years and was guided by a clear principle: to preserve the soul of the place, without turning it into a mere stylistic exercise.
Today, Vicarello is a family-run estate where every detail tells a story. Furniture, works of art, textiles and objects collected during the family’s travels around the world coexist harmoniously with ancient stone walls, exposed beams and historic fireplaces. Nothing is replicable, nothing is standardized.

Hospitality: living the Castle as a private home
The stay experience at Castello di Vicarello is designed for a maximum of 30 guests, ensuring an exceptional level of intimacy and personal attention, rare even in luxury hospitality.
The estate offers ten suites—six in the main residence and four garden suites—along with an independent 210-square-meter villa. Each accommodation is unique, individually designed, featuring generous spaces, private entrances, lounge areas, terraces and secluded gardens. Stone walls, terracotta floors and natural materials blend seamlessly with modern comforts such as air conditioning, audio systems and heating, without ever disrupting the historical balance.
The independent villa is a true private residence: two bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, living room, dining area, panoramic terrace and a heated private pool—ideal for extended stays or for guests seeking complete autonomy.

Pools, gardens and spaces for silence
One of Vicarello’s defining features is the dialogue between architecture and landscape. The three natural marble pools are conceived as places for contemplation rather than simple amenities.
The travertine infinity pool overlooks the rolling Maremma hills; the wellness pool, made of green Tinos marble, is set among olive trees and heated during cooler months; the third pool is reserved for the private villa. Surrounding them are wooden terraces, handcrafted loungers, shaded areas and an atmosphere of absolute tranquility.
The gardens are an integral part of the experience: the olive grove hosts an organic vegetable garden with over fifty varieties of vegetables and more than thirty aromatic herbs, forming the beating heart of the castle’s cuisine.

Tuscan cuisine, raw ingredients and seasonality
The gastronomic offering follows an authentic farm-to-table philosophy. The chefs work closely with the garden, selecting fresh, seasonal ingredients on a daily basis and interpreting them through dishes that respect Tuscan tradition while presenting it in a contemporary way. Guests may dine in the castle’s historic rooms, on the panoramic terrace or outdoors under the starry Maremma sky. Each meal becomes a moment of connection between territory, cuisine and wine.
Wine: a family project, a clear vision
Alongside hospitality, wine represents Vicarello’s other soul. It is a project born from the passion of Carlo Baccheschi Berti and his son Brando—a patient and coherent endeavor that places terroir at its core.
The organic vineyards, covering approximately seven hectares at high density, are surrounded by woodland and Mediterranean scrub. The cultivated varieties—Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese and Merlot—interact with a marine-origin soil rich in clay and calcium, influenced by breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea and protected by Mount Amiata.
The result is wines of great elegance, depth and aging potential, crafted to be enjoyed today or to evolve over time. The award of 5 Bibenda Grapes for the Castello di Vicarello 2019 vintage confirms the strength of a path built on rigor, respect and vision.

A rare and authentic idea of Tuscany
Well-being at Vicarello does not follow preset formulas. Treatments are personalized, using organic oils and natural ingredients sourced from the estate. Massages and rituals can be enjoyed in the privacy of the suite or in green outdoor spaces, surrounded by the scents of lavender and jasmine.
Castello di Vicarello is not a place to pass through, but a place to inhabit. It represents an intimate, profound Tuscany, far from stereotypes, where wine is not an accessory and hospitality is not a service, but a way of being.
An address that interprets wine tourism as a cultural, agricultural and human experience—one capable of leaving a lasting impression on those who live it.
